Nikki is a nursemare foal we just took in from the Last Chance Corral. CJ and Vickie drove over 1000 miles to pick her up. She is just one of thousands of these "discarded" babies.

The average foal weighs in at about 150lbs. and will nurse 12-20 weeks. Nikki was taken from her mother at birth and is now 8 weeks old and weighed approximately 125lbs on arrival. She was thin, scraggly, shaky on her legs and terrified. She has had no one to teach her how to run, how to behave, social manners or just to be a horse. All she has known is living in a pen with other nursemare foals and hoping to be strong enough to get enough milk replacer to survive.

Thanks to the efforts of Last Chance Corral, Victoria Goss and her volunteers and other rescues of their kind, Nikki and the others at least had a chance at life.

Victoria and her crew take in an average of 200 foals a year, mostly during the months of March to May. At a cost of a couple hundred dollars a day, the care of the little angels rests solely in our hands, the contributors and sponsors.

This year's economic challenges caused a drastic drop in donations, so less foals could be accepted and hence, more of them perished.

It is time New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, the 3 most horse-dense populaced states got involved and helped in this endeavour, to save the innocent by-product of mass production.

The PMUs have much exposure, yet it is the mares that need help, not the foals so much. They are at least allowed to nurse and grow. These foals are not, they are just waste.

Our goal next year is a joint venture with the Last Chance Corral. If we can create enough interest by experienced horse people, thereby generating a waiting list of potential permanent and foster homes, we will bring in a small herd of nursemare foals.
